It has finally been confirmed that the long-anticipated grand opening of Ikea Philippines will be held during the last quarter of the year! My mom and I are thrilled to soon be able to redecorate our entire house and buy matching furnishing sets even if we truly do not need to. But aside from being the world’s largest furniture retailer, Ikea is also well-known for its classic Swedish meatballs.
Everyone has a story about how they enter Ikea just to replace or buy one thing, yet their supposedly quick run ends up becoming an entire two-hour shopping excursion within the magical depths of furniture land. There is a high chance that they also sat down to refuel themselves with meatballs after their exhausting time deciding on which desks and shelves go with their current home office. I am certain that my first Ikea experience will be if not exactly the same, very similar to everyone else’s. However, I can no longer wait for another few months for the store to bring their renowned menu item to our country, so I took the initiative to make them myself.
I promise that this recipe is extremely easy to follow--much easier than following Ikea’s instruction manual when assembling their furniture. After recreating the procedure, you will be left with the juiciest meatballs that are blanketed in a full-bodied and thick white gravy. Swedish meatballs are often paired with either buttered vegetables, mashed potatoes or noodles, but my family equally enjoyed them with the former side option and rice.
Recipe
Yields 4-5 servings
~ Ingredients ~
Meatballs
½ pound ground beef
½ pound ground pork
1 egg
⅛ cup or 30 mL milk
⅛ cup or 3 mL all-purpose cream
¼ cup or 30 grams bread crumb
½ cup or 1 medium white onion, diced
⅛ teaspoon nutmeg
⅛ teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoons oil
1 tablespoon butter
Fresh parsley for garnish
Gravy
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
⅛ teaspoon pepper
1 cup or 240 mL milk
1 cup or 250 mL all-purpose cream
1 beef stock cube dissolved in ½ cup o 120 mL water
~ Procedure ~
In a bowl, mix both types of ground meat, egg, milk, all-purpose cream, bread crumbs, white onion, nutmeg, allspice, salt and pepper.
Divide this into 15 portions and roll each portion into a ball.
In a large pan, heat up the butter and the oil. Place the meatballs in the pan making sure that none of them are too close to each other.
After cooking one side for 5 minutes, flip the meatballs and cook the for another 5 minutes. Cover the pan with its matching lid to evenly cook them.
Once they are all done, transfer the meatballs onto a plate and remove half of the remaining juices from the pan.
Using the same pan, mix all the ingredients of the gravy together.
Let it simmer until the sauce has gotten slightly thicker.
Throw the meatballs back into the pan with the gravy and heat them up for 1-2 minutes.
Garnish with parsley and enjoy!
